Road Safety Studies

What is a Road Safety Study?

Unlike the Road Safety Audit, a Road Safety Study (RSS) is not governed by published standards and the authors have a free hand to discuss a wide range of road safety matters. It will often include elements of an RSA but may also consider the road safety implications of alternative highway scheme options. The RSS is an experience based independent assessment, usually carried out during the early stages of a highway scheme design and often as part of a Transport Assessment for a new development proposal. The Road Safety Study sometimes deploys risk assessment techniques to compare and assess the risks to different road users within a given design option. Collision data analysis may inform recommendations on the scheme design, including how the available budget can be spent in the most cost-effective way in road safety terms.

We undertake more than 150 road safety audits and other highway safety related studies each year.
