Fosters Road Estate, Hendon
Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 Road Safety Audits
Gateway RSE conducted Stage 1 and Stage 2 Road Safety Audits of the proposed highway scheme.
Objectives and Challenges
This regeneration scheme provides 217 new homes including 75 extra care units, in addition to 196 retained homes. The road network is reconfigured to form a one-way clockwise loop on the north side of a two-way road. The scheme includes traffic calming, on- and off-street parking and a combination of shared and conventional segregated surfaces.
Various relaxations against normal highway standards were proposed to deliver affordable homes at high density, whilst achieving high-quality in the building design and environment. This challenged the Audit Team to ‘think outside the box’ when considering which features might led to a substantive risk, and which would not. Examples are overhanging structures, narrow footways, the relationship between parking and non-motorised users, and reduced width carriageways.
Solutions
- Seven road safety problems raised at Stage 1
- Eight road safety problems raised at Stage 2, with some reiteration of Stage 1 problems
- All problems resolved through detailed discussions with the Design and Overseeing Organisations
Added Value and Benefits
A high quality/ high density affordable housing scheme with all identified road safety risks mitigated as far as reasonably possible
