Stage 1 and 2 Road Safety Audits
HS2 is Britain’s new high speed rail line from London to Birmingham, one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. Gateway RSE has conducted a series of Stage 1/2 Road Safety Audits of temporary and enabling works in the Birmingham area.
Objectives and Challenges
A feature of the enabling works is the need to accommodate the swept paths of Extendable Articulated Vehicles (EAV), often longer than 35 metres. This involves very wide temporary junction mouths, which often create a hostile environment for vulnerable road users. This required the Auditors to display flexible thinking, and to engage in greater dialogue with the Design and Overseeing Organisations than is generally seen elsewhere.
